ADVANCING ENGLISH FOR SSPS STUDENTS
This is an optional and extra 10-credit in-sessional course to support international students engage and participate on core academic programmes in the School of Social and Political Sciences by developing subject specific academic literacy skills and language. It targets key areas of academic skills and language need including reading-into-seminar speaking and how to effectively produce key features of academic written texts with a view to supporting on-course study. It does so by integrating core course content and using self-reflection and peer work to improve student autonomy.
Intended Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course you should be able to:
- use a variety of reading strategies to efficiently negotiate academic texts
- communicate effectively and appropriately across a defined range of spoken and written academic contexts
- work autonomously to study/do group work in English in order to prepare effectively for, and therefore contribute to, course related tasks

Available to PGT students in the SSPS.

Timetable
The course consists of 10 weeks in semester 1, with two 1-hour classes per week. There is a reading week halfway through the course.
